His, however, had been "souped up." There was a small electric battery sitting fore on the riding platform. He had electrified the scooter.
He said to me: "Have you ever seen anything like this?"
Me: "No, I haven't. That's very interesting."
He: "I made it myself years ago."
Then I read a little hand-lettered sign (it was a small piece of whiteboard) which he had attached to the handle-bar uprights. It said: "I am 96 years old."
Me: "You're 96 years old?"
He: "No, 96 1/2 years old. And I can do anything a teenager can."
Me: {I'm wondering what to say to that.}
He: "I can walk up stairs with both hand in my pockets and not stumble."
Me: "That's great! To what do you attribute you're being so healthy at your age?"
He: "I keep active. And I was an early believer in taking vitamins and minerals."
Me: "I see you're wearing a helmet, so you're safety conscious, too."
He: "Yup."
Then he got on his scooter and silently glided away.

Wonder if he patented his invention. Good genes, I suspect, contributed to his longevity.
