Quick Trip

Last week Thursday through Saturday we visited Son #1 and Gabe in Minnesota.  The weather was good for travel, although the state highways on Thursday were still in a pretty rough condition.

Because of the rain which preceded the snow, and the rapid drop in temperatures, the slush bonded to the pavement where vehicles drove through it.  Plows removed the snow layer but that left the rutted layer of ice.  Temperatures have remained very cold, getting up only to 20 - 23 ° during the day on a couple days, so the road salt hasn't been able to effectively clear the roads completely.  On Thursday good portions of the state roads, and most of the town roads, were like icy washboards.  Needless to say it took somewhat longer to get to the interstate highway.  There the driving surfaces were almost normal because that part of the state didn't have the rain preceding the snow.

In Minneapolis we arrived in early evening traffic, which was compounded by lane closures where trucks were still removing snow piles from the side lanes of the highway.  This was five days after the storm had passed.  It took us about 45 minutes longer than usual to get from the east side of Minneapolis-St. Paul to Eden Prairie where Son #1 lives.

Temperatures remain cold.  It's  4° right now.  The temperatures are supposed to get above freezing tomorrow.  But between now and then we are to get 2 -3 more inches of snow before it turns to freezing drizzle (!) in the morning.  My sister-in-law and her friend are scheduled to fly into Milwaukee tomorrow morning.

Despite the weather we had an enjoyable visit in Eden Prairie.  Here are a couple of photos of Gabe opening some Christmas presents.
