I have never seen anything like this before. We have icicles originating from locations on our maple trees where they have been pruned this winter. The icicles appear to be water, not sap. (The temperatures have been in the teens and twenties for several days. No thaws.)
Have you ever seen such a thing?
Amendment:
After doing a bit of searching on the internet I have found that this IS frozen maple sap. One site suggests eating it to see if it is sweet. Considering there are numerous squirrels around in these trees I think I'll pass on the taste test. I now believe it is maple sap, since I do not see this on other types of trees. And, the sap, I know, was flowing a few weeks ago, because we contacted our favorite producer in the area to reserve some quarts for us.

Maybe you should cancel your order for maple syrup - you have a private supply, free of charge, not necessarily free from squirrels though.
