Last night I attended my first "official" Italian language class at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. Of course, I have been learning the language on my own and also have been exposed to it on several trips to Italy.
The bad thing is, that as a foreign language teacher for forty years, I sat there thinking, "I would teach this another way. I would speak almost exclusively Italian. I would make this class more interactive so we have some practice. We can learn these things without having everything repeated in English."
Oh, well. I know that that's the way it is often done at the college level. It is not like middle school and high school where you really have to keep your customers (a.k.a. students) engaged or risk having discipline problems.
I am there primarily to learn the grammar of the language, anyway. I know lots of vocabulary, mostly in isolation, and I want to learn the way to put them together to get my point across.
