When I logged into my computer this morning my eye was immediately attracted to a news story headline "Computer glitsch causes flight delays."
When I read the story I learned that many flights out of Atlanta had had to be cancelled because of a computer problem and that was causing a rolling problem with flights leaving from other areas of he country.
Of course, today is the day that R was to leave with a group of 17 people, headed via Frankfurt to Venice. He has only an hour and ten minutes in Frankfurt (a very big airport with great distances between gates!) to transfer to the flight to Venice.
I immediately thought of my last flight to Germany with students. We had 21 people and we were to have a layover of approximately 2 hours in Frankfurt before our flight to Berlin. However, since our flight out of Chicago was THREE HOURS late departing (never did find out why) we missed our connection in Frankfurt to Berlin. Even though there are almost hourly flights to Berlin from Frankfurt there were not 21 seats available until late in the evening. We ended up taking the train and arriving in the late afternoon. Thus we lost almost a day of touring in Berlin.
I feared the same thing might happen to R and his group.
Fortunately, it did not. They arrived, in spite of rainy weather, with plenty of time to spare at O'Hare in Chicago. In fact, they got through security with almost two hours to spare (he gave me a call to let me know that everything had gone well so far).
According to the flight tracker, their flight left on time and they should be in Frankfurt at the scheduled time.
So, hopefully, they will have enough time to make their connections to Venice.
Whew!

I immediately thought about the group heading to Italy and wondered if they'd miss their connecting flights. Glad to know things went OK. Nerve wracking, isn't it, to miss connections. Remember our trip from Chicago to Germany years ago...because of trouble at O'Hare. Then to arrive in Bremen several hours late, unable to speak German, no way to contact anyone about transportation to Hasselune.
By the way, does the group in Italy have to speak Italian?
