My recently returned traveller to Italy has told me of an invitation we have received verbally: to spend September 2010 in Italy as the guests of our friends in Udine.
We would not be staying in Udine, however. Part of the time would be spent on the island of Sardinia and the remainder of the time in the Italian Alps. There our friends have a shared-family accomodations: an apartment in Sardinia and a cabin in the Alps. Both of these locations would be new to us.
Early fall weather is usually really nice in Italy. The tourist crowds will have gone home, the intense heat of summer will have passed, and the rains of fall and winter should not have started yet.
It would be a wonderful opportunity--and the traveller should be retired by then.
Who knows if it will happen? We received a similar invitation once before, but the inviting party developed cancer and was undergoing extensive treatment making it impossible to fulfill. And September 2010 is quite a ways off.
But one can dream!

Planning and anticipating is a big part of the enjoyment.
Oh, it sounds like a perfectly wonderful trip! The Boy and I will be quite enviously reading your reports when (if) the trip happens.
I just told him yesterday that it's high time we pack the suitcases and dust off our passports! He's thinking perhaps a return trip to Cuba in the spring. Fun - and I'd love to go, of course - but Italy!!! Sigh...
Tuscany is one place I think would be nice to visit.
Tuscany is beautiful. I'm only familiar with Florence and Siena. Would love to see more of the countryside.
